Prevention and Remedies
To avoid becoming constipated or if you do become constipated, try the following:

Eat foods rich in fiber including fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads, as well as dried fruit, such as apricots, prunes and figs.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Exercise regularly. Walking is an especially effective exercise.
Don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. Schedule regular trips to the bathroom.
Try to eat meals at regularly scheduled times and avoid processed foods whenever possible.
When taking any medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist if there are any side effects, such as constipation, that you might experience.

If you are already taking a prescription or over-the-counter medicine and you become constipated, notify your doctor and follow his or her instructions.
